Summary

An academic enemies-to-lovers YA with all the nerdy drama, high school antics, and heartpounding romance of the Netflix original series Never Have I Ever

Since high school began, Alison Sanger and Ethan Molloy have competed on almost everything。 AP classes, the school paper, community service, it never ends。 If Alison could avoid Ethan until graduation, she would。 Except, naturally, for two over-achieving seniors with their sights on valedictorian and Harvard, they share all the same classes and extracurriculars。 So when their school’s principal assigns them the task of co-planning a previous class’s ten-year reunion, with the promise of a recommendation for Harvard if they do, Ethan and Alison are willing to endure one more activity together if it means beating the other out of the lead。

But with all this extra time spent in each other’s company, their rivalry begins to feel closer to friendship。 And as tension between them builds, Alison fights the growing realization that the only thing she wants more than winning…is Ethan。

I devoured this book。 It is by far my favorite Wibbroka book so far。 The enemies to lovers trope was excellently done。 Maybe the best I’ve read。 I absolutely loved the fact that Alison and Ethan genuinely hated each other。 It just made the rest all the more sweeter and hilarious。 I loved the themes of this book。 I’m a sucker for a good coming of age story and this one brought about the good questions of how do you proceed to next steps of your life while treasuring moments from your past without I devoured this book。 It is by far my favorite Wibbroka book so far。 The enemies to lovers trope was excellently done。 Maybe the best I’ve read。 I absolutely loved the fact that Alison and Ethan genuinely hated each other。 It just made the rest all the more sweeter and hilarious。 I loved the themes of this book。 I’m a sucker for a good coming of age story and this one brought about the good questions of how do you proceed to next steps of your life while treasuring moments from your past without staying in the past。 I can’t wait for Wibbroka’s next book! This was a cute coming of age story。 This is a rivals to, rivals with benefits, to lovers story with a lot of angst。 I enjoyed the banter back and forth between Ethan and Alison and I love that this wasn't some long held unrequited thing and they just fell into it。 They always say love and hate are two sides of the same coin and you just need that tipping point and that is exactly what happened here。 Alison and Ethan compete on absolutely everything and I did like seeing the competitive spirit i This was a cute coming of age story。 This is a rivals to, rivals with benefits, to lovers story with a lot of angst。 I enjoyed the banter back and forth between Ethan and Alison and I love that this wasn't some long held unrequited thing and they just fell into it。 They always say love and hate are two sides of the same coin and you just need that tipping point and that is exactly what happened here。 Alison and Ethan compete on absolutely everything and I did like seeing the competitive spirit in both of them; they made each other better。 If you want a cute YA book, I would recommend this。 I do wish we would have gotten a little more from them in an epilogue, but I guess leaving it open is kind like the point they were both in, in their life。 。。。more

4 starsWhat's Not to Love is a fun throwback to the highs and lows of high school。 complete with overachieving leads and a healthy dose of nostalgia。 Wibberley and Siegemund-Broka get great mileage out of the enemies-to-lovers trope and I applaud their ability to really dig into the social and mental whirlwind that comes with heading off to college。 I would have loved a little more of a slow burn with the central relationship (it really doesn't start to heat up until over 50% into the book), but 4 starsWhat's Not to Love is a fun throwback to the highs and lows of high school。 complete with overachieving leads and a healthy dose of nostalgia。 Wibberley and Siegemund-Broka get great mileage out of the enemies-to-lovers trope and I applaud their ability to really dig into the social and mental whirlwind that comes with heading off to college。 I would have loved a little more of a slow burn with the central relationship (it really doesn't start to heat up until over 50% into the book), but the authors were balancing so many other narratives that I completely understand why they wrote it that way。 I found myself multiple times sitting down to listen to "just one more chapter" only to find that I had spent an hour in the hallways of Fairview High。 Honestly, can you ask for anything more from a book?Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for a fair and honest review! 。。。more

4。5 starsI am a sucker for enemies-to-lovers romances。 Two nerds fighting it out over academics reads like perfection to me。 Going in, I expected something cute, with a little bit of angst and a whole lot of banter。 What I did not expect was getting to read so much about Alison's best friend who is stuck in a toxic relationship, or her sister who followed the same path Alison is on back in high school but has now dropped everything in order to figure out what she really wants。 Over the last 4。5 starsI am a sucker for enemies-to-lovers romances。 Two nerds fighting it out over academics reads like perfection to me。 Going in, I expected something cute, with a little bit of angst and a whole lot of banter。 What I did not expect was getting to read so much about Alison's best friend who is stuck in a toxic relationship, or her sister who followed the same path Alison is on back in high school but has now dropped everything in order to figure out what she really wants。 Over the last year, I have been having an existential crisis over where my life is headed and I could relate to Alison's sister in a lot of ways。 “I think in high school and college, we’re told what to want and aspire to。 With grades and degrees, I had these obvious signs of success。 It became easy to mistake them for what I really wanted and easier to let those markers guide my decisions。 When I was in the real world, I had to choose for myself what success should mean。”I think the reason I enjoyed reading this book was because it wasn't solely about Alison and Ethan。 The different characters have made different choices, had a lot of varied experiences and a lot of them are still trying to figure themselves out。 Alison reads like a seventeen going on thirty-five character who thinks she knows exactly who she is。 Seeing her sister struggling makes her realise that there is so much she still doesn't know about herself or where her life is headed。 I like that this book is not just about the rivalry turned romance but also about so much more。 Most romance novels end with the leads perfectly sure about their romance。 I like that in this book, Alison admits to not knowing how long the relationship will last or where they will be ten years from now。 This made things seem more real somehow。 Overall, this was an almost perfect read。 If you enjoy YA novels with a lot of banter, enemies turning into lovers, themes related to coming of age and people trying to figure themselves out, this is a perfect read for you。 。。。more

Second, she's bisexual。 We love that!。。。。。Well。。。She doesn't have the most fabulous character development。 She doesn't start well, with her not getting over her ex yet, dating a guy who questions her past queer relationship and an unnecessary piece of dialogue where she over-sexualizes a character we don't even recognize。 She then finally relieves herself off of a specific burden but only to move forward our annoying protagonist's story。 Which I suppose is the point of this whole book which I can't the authors for。Before concluding the rant with fully trashing Alison, let's talk about Ethan。。。。。。。。If there's anything to talk in regards to him that is。 He's passive。 That's it。 He's smart, not the most likeable, white。。。。that's it。 A huge chunk of his actions depend on Alison。 And of course he starts changing just in order for Alison to feel relief and no sense of burden。*sigh* Here we go。 Alison isn't likeable。 She doesn't care about anybody but herself, putting everyone around her to the self-made standard she made that isn't that achievable。 She treats her sister, that's currently in a mid 20s crisis, like shit just because shes not doing the same girlboss moves that Alison does。 Alison point out her various points of hypocrisy in the book。 Does anything happen? Not really。 Things just get brushed off and she doesn't change。 Heck, the people around her change in favour of her own tastes, even if it isn't the most right thing in the situationAlso this book isn't exempt of criticism just because of its market range。 All teenagers aren't cunts。 Some are, and I suppose that's valid。 But at the same time I won't hesitate to critique novels of this kind when other various voices aren't being given the opportunity to flourish。 I have to give merit where it's due so I guess thanks to the author for making a book that made me write this much due to various negative emotions 。。。more

I usually really enjoy books from these authors。 What's not to love has all the tropes I enjoy。 Enemies to lovers is one of my favorites。 With all that being said I found this to be very slow, my attention drifted often。 I did enjoy the characters and the ending was great。 The ending felt true to a real high school senior。 The narration was fantastic。 She never disappoints。 I think it added to the story。 I would have even loved a dual perspective。 I can just imagine how good the audio would have I usually really enjoy books from these authors。 What's not to love has all the tropes I enjoy。 Enemies to lovers is one of my favorites。 With all that being said I found this to be very slow, my attention drifted often。 I did enjoy the characters and the ending was great。 The ending felt true to a real high school senior。 The narration was fantastic。 She never disappoints。 I think it added to the story。 I would have even loved a dual perspective。 I can just imagine how good the audio would have been。 All in all it was a solid 3 star read。 。。。more

This was a simple somewhat fun but annoying read (at times)。 I normally like YA but the two main characters were just a little too annoying at times。 The back and forth started out fun but after a while got old。 The read was still cute though so I think I would give this author another shot。

Narrator Elizabeth Cottle does a fantastic job of bringing Alison's slightly neurotic doubts and excitement to life。 Not only Alison's parts, she conveys each character and emotion perfectly。 I'm partly convinced that I'm rating this a bit higher than I probably would if I'd read it just because I enjoyed her work so much。 Many happy thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the listen! 。。。more

I’ll admit that this actually isn’t my favorite Wibbroka read, though it ultimately ended up being likable enough。 These writers know how to take tropes and types and whip them together into a story that also touches on themes that can feel relatable (or in my case, a little nostalgic)。

As a teenager, I've read a lot of YA novels that, despite being good books, just didn't really accurately represent the high school experience。 This one, however, set a new standard (the descriptions of ASG kids were right on the nose)。 I'm a sucker for enemies-to-lovers especially when the MCs have history, and as a HS senior who's spent much of the past four years focused on the future and not in the present, I felt like I finally found some characters I could resonate with。 The various events As a teenager, I've read a lot of YA novels that, despite being good books, just didn't really accurately represent the high school experience。 This one, however, set a new standard (the descriptions of ASG kids were right on the nose)。 I'm a sucker for enemies-to-lovers especially when the MCs have history, and as a HS senior who's spent much of the past four years focused on the future and not in the present, I felt like I finally found some characters I could resonate with。 The various events and interactions that took place throughout the plot all felt like an actual, modern HS experience。 I also loved the slow-burn aspect: It took so long to get to The Big Fight (you know the one。。。) thay I was getting worried it would never happen! I did not ask for this。 Maybe I wasn't clear when I asked for enemies to lovers。 Maybe I should have asked for "enemies" to "I don't like you but we're going to make this work to achieve this goal" to "okay fine you're actually not that bad" to "friends" to "lovers。" And okay, maybe we do get some moments of true bonding between these two characters, but the second their relationship starts to progress, something happens that pushes them back 50 steps to enemies once again。 I swear, one of the biggest "enemy" moves and "sabotages" happens a chapter before this。 What?? I don't know, there's something about it that I just didn't connect to。 Problem 2) The CharactersBypassing the main characters, who were slightly annoying at times but okay for at least half the book, I just didn't like the side characters。 They were just irrelevant for me。 We have Alison's whole family, but I didn't like a single one of them。 I mean, I definitely skimmed over the last quarter of this book, so maybe they got a secret redemption, but they were not saved for me。 Alison's sister is just bland。 She's someone whose life got ruined when she lost her job and life in Chicago, and now has to live at home with her family, but tries her best to stay positive despite that。 I can't tell you anything else about her。 Alison's mom and dad also weren't memorable and the only thing I remember about them is the fact that they're older than all of her friends' parents。 Then we have this random driver's ed teacher named Hector, and I didn't really understand the point of him either。 I thought his entire existence was used as a plot device to make Alison and Ethan hang out and bond more。 I couldn't care less about what happened to him。 Problem 3) The Predictability and the Happily Ever AfterThis book is so predictable。 If you give me the synopsis, I can probably tell you all the major plot points of the story。 Basically, if you want to know what happens, assume every character is going to receive the best possible outcome。 Everyone gets a happily ever after。 We have one ending that's just a bit different from the "standard" you would expect, but in the end, I would still consider it a happily ever after。 It makes it a wannabe bittersweet ending, but it's still so sweet that I wouldn't call it anything near that (what did I even type there)。 Bittersweet endings do not exist here, and everyone gets what they want。 I do like happy endings, but plot twists are so much more fun! Combined with my other problems of this book, this just made it worse。 Problem 4) The Weak PlotThis is a heavily character driven book。 Almost every romance I have ever read is。 We get one major plot point, but it does not stand on its own in any way。 Everything that happens is used to further the relationship of the characters。 And it's okay! I do like character driven books, but you're going to have to know that the plot isn't going to keep you reading。 Now that we've got all of that out of the way, I will give you some things I enjoyed about this story, that made this a 3 star book instead of a 2 star one!Overall, the middle of this book was not bad at all。 I actually did enjoy some of Ethan and Alison's banter。 It's a fun rivals aspect, and it was somewhat entertaining to read。 There's also this one chapter where Ethan and Alison have a conversation that slides their relationship forward in the perfect amount。 I thought that some of the school aspects of it were somewhat relatable, and there were times where I was like "yeah that sounds a bit like me。" But in the end, it sadly was not enough to make me like this book。 My preferences in general are shifting slowly away from YA to adult, so that was definitely a part of it。 I do see an audience for this book, and I get why some people really enjoyed this, but it wasn't for me。 。。。more

Today I listened to the new book, What’s Not To Love by Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund Broka。 In a classic enemies to lovers YA book, these high schoolers learn that there is more to life than their rivalry。 This book follows two high school seniors who are fierce academic competitors。 The story discusses the correlation between hate and love and how thin that line can become。 When forced together on a 10-year academic class reunion, they decide to call a temporary ceasefire to get this task accomplished。 I honestly couldn’t tell you if they followed one of Shakespeare’s plays like their other books。 The audiobook provides a fun way to hear their rivalry firsthand。 The narrator perfectly times the moments when their competitiveness is at an all-time high。 However, it seemed like the audiobook kind of lagged and skipped in a few places。 I couldn’t tell if that was due to the audio file or the app I was listening through。 I always love books by this husband and wife duo and this one is no exception。 I highly recommend it! 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️QOTD: What is your favorite YA trope? 。。。more

A reading "okay", at some point in the novel, I can not say when, the competition between the characters is pleasant, the novel is superficial, leaves some spark at the end, but are only empty expectations, unless the authors decide to make a continuation, which honestly, I believe it can be good。 Alison and Ethan are about to live the best of their lives at university, there will be many ups and downs, lots of obstacles in the relationship, and they need and will mature more! The way the authors leave "over time" important decisions in the lives of the characters, for those who decided to read the book with some expectation, can be frustrating, so in a few years it may be good to write more about these two, for those and readers who have been wanting more, hoping something more for the end can at least be satisfied, because I am not。However, after all, the book was worth my time, it was a quick read, but I confess that I got a little attached to the idea of knowing how Alison and Ethan will be 10 years from now, so reading is frustrating, as it always is when we come across less profound novels and open endings! It gets that feeling that it's "For now, that's it folks。 That's what for today!" 。。。more
